I was born in ’65
Some years before my grandpa died
One day Daddy didn’t come home
So Mama raised her kids alone

I recall my Daddy
As the man I Didn’t know
Through the years I’ve wondered
Did he ever miss to watch his son grow
Through the eyes of a child He was a hero
Like a general on his horse He seemed so tall
But soon I learned That truth runs in circles
Now the ol’ man’s just An ol’ man after all

Started school where I learned to swear
And parents taught their kids to stare
‘Cause they all knew that Daddy ran
And I couldn’t make’ em understand

I recall my Daddy
As the man I Didn’t know
Through the years I’ve wondered
Did he ever miss to watch his son grow
Through the eyes of a child He was a hero
Like a general on his horse He seemed so tall
But soon I learned That truth runs in circles
Now the ol’ man’s just An ol` man after all

Well Mama made me what I am
She raised her kids with a gentle hand
Late some nights we could hear her cry
But we were kids so we never knew why

I recall my Daddy
As the man I Didn’t know
Through the years I’ve wondered
Did he ever miss to watch his son grow
Through the eyes of a child He was a hero
Like a general on his horse He seemed so tall
But soon I learned That truth runs in circles
Now the ol’ man’s just An ol’ man after all

Hope I meet him again someday
‘Though I don’t know what I’m gonna say
He oughta know that his boy is fine
He oughta know he ain’t no Father of mine

I recall my Daddy
As the man I Didn’t know
Through the years I’ve wondered
Did he ever miss to watch his son grow
Through the eyes of a child He was a hero
Like a general on his horse He seemed so tall
But soon I learned That truth runs in circles
Now the ol’ man’s just An ol’ man after all
